In 2025, video game sales in the UK reached £5.4 billion.
The Entertainment Retailers Association, referencing sources such as NielsenIQ/GfK Entertainment, Omdia, and GSD/IFSE, reported a 7.4% growth from the previous year. This marks the most significant increase since 2020, when there was a 27.9% surge compared to 2019.
The primary contributor to this growth was an 8.8% rise in mobile game revenue, amounting to £1.88 billion, following a 5.5% improvement between 2023 and 2024. Mobile games accounted for 35.5% of the industry’s revenue for the year.
Additionally, revenue from console game downloads rose to $857.6 million, reflecting an 11.5% uptick, while physical sales decreased by 1% to £318.8 million, representing only 5% of total UK game sales.
Digital transactions brought in £5 billion, marking an 8% annual growth. The top-selling title was EA Sports FC 26, with over 1.97 million units sold, combining both physical and digital copies.
Despite the trend towards digital, the ERA highlighted that 45% of game revenue was from direct purchases, a stark contrast to the 16.6% seen in music and 7.2% in the video sector.
The Association noted that from 2016 to 2025, the UK’s GDP grew by 12%, while the video game sector saw an 86% increase, expanding 7.2 times faster.
“While the extraordinary growth of 27.9% observed in 2020 has slowed, the market’s ingenuity revitalized its expansion in 2025,” stated ERA CEO Kim Bayley.
“We are optimistic that this trajectory will continue into 2026.”
The broader UK entertainment industry, encompassing games, music, and video, rose to £13.3 billion in 2025, experiencing a 7.1% rise year-over-year.
