Isiah Whitlock Jr., who brought memorable characters to life in HBO’s “The Wire” and multiple Spike Lee films, died following a brief illness. He was 71.
Manager Brian Liebman confirmed Whitlock’s death to Deadline and shared the news on social media, describing the loss of his client and friend.
“It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr. If you knew him – you loved him,” Liebman wrote. “A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.”
The cause of Whitlock’s illness was not disclosed.
Whitlock earned recognition for portraying State Sen. R. Clayton “Clay” Davis, a corrupt politician in the critically acclaimed HBO drama “The Wire.” He appeared across all five seasons of the series.
Director Spike Lee, who worked with Whitlock on multiple projects, mourned the actor on social media, writing: “Today I Learned Of The Passing Of My Dear Beloved Brother ISIAH WHITLOCK. GOD BLESS.” Whitlock appeared in four of Lee’s films: “25th Hour,” “Chi-Raq,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Da 5 Bloods.”
Whitlock maintained an active career spanning decades. His first notable television appearance came in 1987 with a role on “Cagney & Lacey.” Most recently, he appeared in the Netflix series “The Residence,” which premiered in March 2025. He also had roles in “Goodfellas” and “Veep.”
