Alan Ritchson has been one of the most popular fan cast choices for Batman in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. However, during a recent interview, the Reacher star expressed uncertainty about taking on the Caped Crusader, making it unlikely that he will play Bruce Wayne in the new continuity. While discussing his future in the franchise, Ritchson clarified that he is interested in exploring other roles rather than Batman and Aquaman, another huge DC character.

Why Alan Ritchson can’t be Batman or Aquaman in DCU

When asked about reprising Aquaman, a role he first portrayed in Smallville, Ritchson said, “No, no, I’d never take that from Momoa, I have too much respect. I love Jason Momoa.” He added, “No, I think there, I would definitely wanna explore some new horizons, and I think uh, I have a feeling we may. We’ll see.” Despite Momoa transitioning to play Lobo in the DCU, Ritchson emphasized that he would not step into Aquaman’s mantle.

Ritchson already has a strong history with DC roles. He played Hawk in Titans and Aquaman in several seasons of Smallville. His Aquaman teamed up with Clark Kent, Green Arrow, Bart Allen, and Victor Stone. In season 10, the series revealed he had married Mera and fought Slade Wilson. These appearances cemented his DC legacy. In recent interviews, he expressed genuine interest in portraying Wildcat in James Gunn’s DCU.

James Gunn’s DCU currently prioritizes Superman, The Brave and the Bold, Lanterns, and Supergirl projects. The franchise has not confirmed Aquaman’s return, leaving the character’s future uncertain. Since Gunn has confirmed Momoa as Lobo, Batman is also being recast. Ritchson’s recent comments strongly suggest he is actively discussing another potential role within the expanding DC Universe.

He has hinted at speaking with Gunn about potential opportunities. Ritchson said he prefers to “explore new horizons.” For now, Batman and Aquaman remain off his list, leaving room for him to take on Wildcat or another character in the upcoming timeline.
