NEED TO KNOW
Olayinka Oladimeji returned from a trip to find her room decorated for her 27th birthday with balloons, gifts and photos
She says the surprise left her emotional because she had always been the one decorating her own room each year
The gesture was planned by her brother’s girlfriend, whom Oladimeji says has become like a sister to her
For years, Olayinka Oladimeji had a birthday tradition she handled herself. If she wanted her room covered in balloons and decorations, she was the one who spent the time making it happen.
That’s why a recent surprise left the 27-year-old in tears. After returning home from a trip, Oladimeji walked into a room filled with pink balloons, gifts and photos of herself, all put together by her brother’s girlfriend.
The emotional moment, which she later shared on TikTok, showed Oladimeji breaking down as she took in the thoughtful display. The video’s text overlay read, “coming back from my trip and walking into the room my brother’s girlfriend decorated for me will forever be a core memory for me.”
For viewers, it looked like a sweet birthday surprise. For Oladimeji, it was something much deeper.
“When I say ‘for the first time in 27 years,’ I meant that,” Oladimeji tells PEOPLE. “All my birthdays as an adult, I’ve been the one decorating my room because I like it so much.”
She never expected anyone else to take on the tradition for her. “It made me very emotional because honestly, I didn’t ever think anyone would do it for me,” she says. “It caught me off guard. It’s like your impossible dream came true.”
The surprise was especially meaningful because Oladimeji immediately recognized how much work had gone into it. Having decorated birthday rooms herself year after year, she knew exactly what it took. When she first walked through the door, her mind raced as she tried to figure out who was responsible.
“My mind started scanning the list of people that would’ve done it,” she recalls. “But I knew my brother wasn’t home the night before, so it’s either my ex or her. So I called her immediately.”
That instinct came from the close bond the two women have built over the years. Oladimeji says her brother’s girlfriend has become more like family than a future in-law.
“Myself and her have been like sisters since their relationship,” she says. “She sleeps in my bed sometimes and also is comfortable to take my stuff, and I’m okay with it too. We spend more time together when she comes visiting.”
The effort behind the surprise made the gesture even more meaningful. Along with decorating the room, her brother’s girlfriend printed photos she had sourced from Oladimeji’s social media pages and incorporated them into the display.

“She’s a darling,” Oladimeji says. “Her gesture towards me meant a lot to me because I know how hard it is to decorate a room. I’ve done it many times. It’s a lot of work and time-consuming.”
Even after the initial shock wore off, the emotions lingered. “I cried most of the day,” she says. “I couldn’t process it.”
Eventually, the celebration continued with friends and family, but the decorations remained long after the birthday festivities ended.
“I partied with my friends and family,” Oladimeji says. “The decorations lasted two weeks before they all got worn out.”
