Deni Hines has hit back at negative viewer reaction to her time in the I’m A Celebrity jungle.
The star has been at the centre of criticism from fans of the show this week, with some labelling her time in camp as “toxic” while others questioned why she signed up in the first place.
Speaking with Hines following her controversial exit, the strong-willed singer insisted that she is completely unbothered about what fans with a negative opinion have to say about her.
“Social media reaction hasn’t tainted my time at all seeing as I’ve been gone since December when we filmed the show. I see some of it, but everybody’s got an opinion like an a**hole, man,” she told news.com.au.
“There’s people that I don’t like, but do you think I have the time to go to their page and write something negative?”
During her time in camp, the Australian singer ruffled some feathers among her campmates and had a couple of clashes, including one very heated exchange with MAFS star Cyrelle Paule.
While most celebrities would choose to give a diplomatic response, the outspoken star’s refreshing attitude toward honesty meant that she couldn’t be anything but when it came to revealing who she’s still in touch with from the show.
“There’s people in life that I don’t want to be friends with and people in life that I do want to be friends with,” Hines said.
“Those are the campmates I have contacted since leaving the jungle.”
Pushed to reveal which co-stars made the cut, Hines revealed: “That’s Luke, that’s Dyson, that’s Rachel. Those are the ones that I’ve swapped numbers with. And also Rebecca and Conchetta.”
“Luke and Dyson are two very f***ing amazing men. Just really good guys,” she continued.
“I would love Luke to win this. Luke is the most beautiful 30-year-old man. He’s just got a great head on his shoulders. He’s got a beautiful heart. He deserves to win this. And I don’t know who wins this sh*t, but he deserves to win it.”
Despite the negative reaction from many viewers about her time in the jungle, Hines seemingly hasn’t been deterred from returning to competitive reality television in the future.
“I would love to do Dancing With The Stars again,” she confessed.
“I loved that show, it was wonderful. It was the most intense thing I’ve ever done in my life. I love doing shows where I can get fit while doing it!”
She revealed she took the first chance she could to congratulate Robert Irwin on his incredible win on the US version of the show late last year.
“When I was on I’m A Celebrity I got the chance to meet Robert (Irwin). I gave him a cuddle and said ‘Man, you killed it’ on Dancing With The Stars!’ He killed that show, he was just so, so good!”
Deni went on to talk about her plans for the next year, which include getting back into the studio with her band.
One thing her future doesn’t involve, however, is moving back to the UK, where she lived for five years while signed to Mushroom records.
“I don’t really trust London these days,” she admitted.
“I was there back in the 90s. It was a totally different vibe. I just don’t know how safe it is now. I do love Brixton. I once had a guy slap my a** in some latex pants on the street.”
In the last few days, viewers reacted on social media to the intense rivalry between Hines and Paule.
Things came to a head when Paule questioned Hines on whether she could “actually sing”.
Speaking on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Wednesday morning, Hines didn’t mince her words when opening up about the confrontation.
“I didn’t know Cyrelle because I haven’t lived in Australia for eight years,” she said.
“But I thought, well, for somebody who’s 36. Okay, maybe I don’t know you. It kind of put me on the back foot. Like, you’re Australian, you’re 36 and you’re asking me if I can really sing.”
“We thought that rubbed you the wrong way,” Jackie responded.
“It not just rubbed me the wrong way. It just seemed very … Like, you’re Australian,” Hines said.
“How can you not know that I sing? And you’re 36, you’re not 22. And that’s a bit like, do I need to hit you right now?”
