Air India Rolls Out New Inflight Entertainment System on Boeing 787-9

Air India has placed its latest Boeing 787-9 aircraft into service with a newly installed inflight entertainment system supplied by Thales, marking a notable update to the onboard experience for travelers. The aircraft entered service on 1 February 2026 and is equipped with Thales’ AVANT Up inflight entertainment (IFE) platform, a system designed to integrate advanced hardware, software, and content delivery within the cabin environment.

The deployment of this system reflects a continued focus on improving the onboard environment for long-haul and leisure-oriented travelers, with features aimed at entertainment access, device connectivity, and passenger interaction throughout the journey. While the aircraft itself represents a new addition to the fleet, the primary change for passengers lies in the digital and entertainment capabilities available during flight.

AVANT Up System and Onboard Content Capabilities

At the core of the onboard experience is the AVANT Up IFE platform, which has been installed across the new Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The system offers access to more than 3,000 hours of onboard entertainment content. This content library includes what has been described as the largest selection of Indian entertainment available onboard, presented across multiple languages to support a diverse passenger base.

The entertainment offering has been designed to support extended travel durations, allowing passengers to access a wide range of viewing options without reliance on personal devices. The system’s interface enables browsing and interaction directly through seatback displays, ensuring content access remains consistent throughout the flight.

In addition to entertainment volume, the system incorporates an interactive 3D moving map. This feature allows travelers to follow the aircraft’s progress during the journey, supported by route-based programming intended to enhance engagement during different phases of flight. Together, these elements form the digital foundation of the cabin experience on the new aircraft.

Display Technology, Power, and Connectivity for Travelers

The AVANT Up platform on Air India’s 787-9 aircraft integrates several hardware-focused features designed to support modern travel habits. Each seat is equipped with an Optiq 4K QLED HDR display, engineered to deliver high-resolution visuals and enhanced color performance. These displays are positioned to support long-duration viewing, particularly relevant for passengers undertaking extended journeys.

Power availability is addressed through the inclusion of Thales’ Pulse dynamic power supply system. This configuration allows for in-screen USB-A and USB-C charging, with power output reaching up to 60 watts. The inclusion of both USB standards enables passengers to charge a variety of personal devices directly from the seat, reducing reliance on external adapters.

Wireless connectivity is also supported through Bluetooth pairing, allowing travelers to connect personal headphones or compatible devices directly to the inflight entertainment system. This feature removes the need for wired audio accessories and aligns with increasing passenger preference for personal wireless equipment during travel.

An intuitive user interface has been integrated into the system, including a dedicated Kids UI. This interface structure is intended to simplify navigation for different passenger groups while maintaining access to the full range of available content and features.

Enhancing the Inflight Experience for Leisure Travelers

For many leisure-focused travelers, inflight entertainment plays a central role in shaping the overall travel experience. Access to a broad range of content, combined with responsive displays and intuitive controls, allows passengers to manage their time onboard in a way that aligns with personal preferences. Whether used continuously or intermittently, such systems can influence how travelers perceive comfort and engagement during a journey.

The presence of multilingual entertainment options supports a wider audience and reflects the varied backgrounds of passengers traveling for tourism-related purposes. The ability to explore entertainment selections, monitor flight progress, and manage personal devices from a single interface contributes to a streamlined onboard environment, particularly during longer travel periods.

From a travel perspective, these features are increasingly viewed as part of the overall journey rather than an optional add-on. Entertainment systems now function as a consistent companion throughout the flight, supporting relaxation, engagement, and routine continuity for travelers.

Digital Comfort as Part of the Modern Travel Journey

As travel continues to emphasize convenience and personal control, onboard digital systems have become an integral component of the passenger experience. Features such as high-definition displays, integrated charging solutions, and wireless connectivity align with broader expectations formed through everyday device usage on the ground.

For travelers, particularly those undertaking extended trips, the ability to remain connected to personal devices while accessing curated onboard content supports a sense of continuity throughout the journey. Interactive elements, such as route-based programming and moving maps, also provide contextual awareness that can enhance engagement without introducing complexity.

While the physical aspects of travel remain unchanged, digital enhancements such as those provided by the AVANT Up platform contribute to a more adaptable cabin environment. These systems allow passengers to tailor their onboard experience according to individual habits, reinforcing the role of inflight technology in contemporary travel.
