The Godfather costars Al Pacino and Diane Keaton were romantically linked throughout filming of the trilogy. Keaton reportedly gave her on-again, off-again boyfriend an ultimatum before they called it quits in 1990.
“Looking back, Al admits the love of his life was Diane who he’s always called, ‘an amazing woman,'” a source told Daily Mail. “I know he will forever regret he didn’t make his move when he had the chance.”
The insider continued, “For years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, ‘If it’s meant to be, it’s never too late for a do-over.’ But sadly, now it is.”
While Keaton never married, she previously opened up about her feelings toward the Scarface star during a 2004 interview with Barbara Walters.
“Al was simply the most entertaining man … To me, that’s, that is the most beautiful face,” she said at the time. “I think Warren [Beatty] was gorgeous, very pretty, but Al’s face is like whoa. Killer, killer face.”
The source told Daily Mail that Keaton and Pacino lived “only a few miles form each other” leading up to her death, but added that “they never spoke.”
“I once asked him why, and he told me, ‘There’s no need to talk with each other. We said everything that needed to be said at the time,'” the insider claimed.
The Annie Hall star died on October 11, a spokesperson confirmed to People. Little is known of her cause of death, but the family asked for privacy.
Keaton was 79.
