You may remember Alex Hancak from his Safe Travels and Au Revoir! videos we featured a couple years ago. He’s back with Homesick, another banger with his crew, filmed on the VX with great editing and music. After you check it out, read some words from Alex about his filming journey.
“10 years ago on my 20th birthday I premiered my first skate video titled “Friends”. It was a 45 minute full length VX video that took nearly 3 years to finish, with a ragtag group of homies I met at my local skatepark that I somehow convinced everyone to film full parts for. One of them I even met through an online fingerboarding forum who I’m still friends with to this day. 10 years later on my 30th birthday, I premiered my final VX video.
Back in 2023 after finishing “Safe Travels”, I ended up liking the name so much that I wanted to play off of it. In 2024 I released “Au Revoir!”, and then this year, “Homesick” to complete the trilogy.
Over the span of 10 years I’ve made 6 skate videos, all of which were filmed completely with the VX. I grew up through the viewfinder of the damn thing and gone through more of them than I can count! I even bought my MK1 in 2016 while I was on the clock at work, my boss was like “what the fuck, are you buying drugs at work?” It’s my favorite camera of all time, and at one point felt like my only identity. And during that time my friends would haze about me filming VX for so long and even though I’d shrug it off most times, I knew in the back of my head there would come a time where making the switch would make more sense. Filming for me towards the end of this video slowly became monotonous, I began to get burnt out having to use the tapeless video recorder with all the external cords and going through double A batteries every weekend started to burn a hole in my wallet. That’s when I knew it was time to switch things up.
It’s funny, I never thought a video camera could have such an impact on my life. There’s a reason it’s still around 30 years later, many reasons actually. But although it was a bittersweet feeling finally putting it on the shelf, I think my 20 year old self would be proud of this one. The future is now, old man.”—Alex Hancak
