Actress Polly Holliday, best known for playing the wisecracking waitress Flo on the sitcom “Alice,” has died. She was 88.
Her theatrical agent, Dennis Aspland, confirmed her death on Sept. 9 to the New York Times. It is believed she died due to pneumonia.
Holliday garnered national fame playing the tart-tongued Flo on the sitcom, who frequently spouted her catchphrase, “Kiss My Grits” to anyone who dared cross her.
She earned several Emmy nominations for playing Flo and won a Golden Globe Award for best supporting actress in a television series in 1979 and 1980. The character even got her own spin-off series, “Flo,” that only lasted one season.
However, Holliday had an extensive film and stage career that went far beyond “Alice,” playing a bitter, wealthy dowager in “Gremlins,” a camp director in the 1998 remake of “The Parent Trap,” and Robin Williams’ neighbor in “Mrs. Doubtfire.”
Her other film and TV credits include “All the President’s Men,” “Moon Over Parador,” “Fair Game,” “The Golden Girls,” “Homicide,” and “Home Improvement.”
She also had starring roles in numerous Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” which earned her a Tony nomination in 1990, “Wedding Band,” “All Over Town,” “Picnic” and “Arsenic and Old Lace.”
“An actor is unfortunate if he doesn’t get to spend a lot of time onstage,” Holliday told The Tampa Bay Times in 1992. “When you’re onstage, you get to practice every night.”
