Since launching her music career, Addison Rae—who now goes mononymously by Addison—has been wholly upfront about what really matters to her. “I don’t need your drugs / I’d rather get, rather get high fashion,” she declares on the third single off her self-titled debut. “I don’t want cheap love / I’d rather get high fashion.”
In truth, fashion has been a crucial part of the TikTok phenom-turned indie pop star’s rebranding. Far past the days of dancing videos and Hype House membership, Addison has leveraged her social media fame to become one of the most exciting new voices in pop. And since teaming up with her stylist, Dara, fashion has played a big part in that world-building.
Whether it’s a Madonna-inspired ballerina look at the MTV Video Music Awards, or a pink polka-dot set at Coachella, Addison never shies away from a fit that’s daring, sexy, or freaky. Now, with her Addison Tour, she’s got the perfect stage to show off her zany style.
Last year, Dara disclosed to Harper’s Bazaar the thought process behind some of her styling for the Louisiana native. As she discussed the costumes for the “Aquamarine” music video, the stylist revealed that she was inspired by icons such as Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot.
“I love that kind of ease and effortlessness, because it’s indulging in glamour in a way that’s comfortable for you and it’s not for the rest of [the world] to understand,” Dara explained.
That same ethos could apply to the wardrobe on the Addison Tour—the “Diet Pepsi’ singer’s first-ever concert circuit—which began in Europe this past August and will continue across the U.S., Canada, and Australia through November.
As the world’s biggest pop stars get more elaborate with their tour looks—Addison’s remain stripped back. But while they may seem deceptively simple, the use of color and shape helps them pop off the stage—and they feel distinctly Addison.
She and Dara have relied on a few different brands for the singer’s wardrobe. There’s Michael Schmidt Studios, which provided her with a kinky, black leather cone bra and jewel-encrusted boots. There’s August Barron (formerly known as All-In), which she turned to for a series of pastel, ’50s-inspired apron dresses.
Other highlights have included a metallic silver minidress from Self-Portrait, a military-style hat from Ruslan Baginskiy, and an electric neon set from Weed Slut Studio.
Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of all, though, came when Addison stepped out in a jewel-encrusted underwear set and matching single glove from Versace, which she wore on stage a mere 24 hours after the look was unveiled on the runway during Milan Fashion Week.
Addison has closed each of her shows by performing her biggest hit to date: “Diet Pepsi” (which got an extra boost of popularity this past August thanks to a rousing cover by Ben Platt).
For this number, our showgirl steps out in a dramatic white look, custom-made by Miss Claire Sullivan. It consists of a corset-style bodysuit and a fluffy tulle skirt with a long, floor-grazing train and voluminous tufts that float like angel wings at her sides. In fact, “angelic” is simply a great way to describe it.
When I attended one of Addison’s shows in New York City, I couldn’t help but notice her impact on the way many of the attendees dressed. Low-rise jeans and visible underwear were plentiful; leather and Y2K nods abounded. A few people even wore hot pink wigs.
But once the show started, it was impossible for anyone to take their eyes of Addison.
