Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has “not understood the seriousness” of his situation and believes he will avoid criminal charges, according to a royal biographer. Andrew Lownie, who has spent five years researching the former Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson, said he has been told that Andrew “thinks he isn’t going to be charged” following his recent arrest on suspicion of possible misconduct in public office. It comes amid renewed scrutiny linked to the release of files connected to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Andrew has consistently denied all wrongdoing. Lownie, author of Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, said that while public and media interest in the Yorks has intensified, those closest to the duke appear to be underestimating the gravity of the situation.
He told The Times: “Everything I’ve heard about Sarah and Andrew is that they haven’t really understood the seriousness of their predicament.
“I think they’re all slightly in denial.”
He added: “Everything I’ve heard about Sarah and Andrew is that they haven’t really understood the seriousness of their predicament.”

The files, released as part of civil litigation in the United States, have renewed scrutiny of the Duke of York’s past associations and conduct, despite his repeated denials of wrongdoing.
Among the most widely circulated pieces of evidence remains the photograph showing Andrew with Virginia Giuffre, then known as Virginia Roberts, taken at the London home of Ghislaine Maxwell.
The image, first made public years ago, re-entered public debate as part of the broader release of Epstein-related material. Andrew has consistently said he has “no recollection” of the photograph being taken and has denied Giuffre’s allegations that Epstein trafficked her to him when she was 17.
In 2022, Andrew reached an out-of-court settlement with Giuffre in a civil sexual assault case filed in New York, without any admission of liability. The agreement was understood to include a substantial financial payment.
Although Andrew has not been charged with any criminal offence and continues to deny all allegations, the re-emergence of the Epstein files has intensified pressure on the monarchy.
