Andrew Mountbatten Windsor has been asked to appear before the US Congress for questioning over his links to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Robert Garcia, the most senior Democratic member of the US congressional panel, said: “Rich and powerful men have evaded justice for far too long. Now, former Prince Andrew has the opportunity to come clean and provide justice for the survivors. Oversight Democrats will not stop fighting for accountability and transparency for survivors of Epstein and his gang of co-conspirators.”
The formal request, sent via a letter asking Andrew to appear before the US Congress, came just days after the disgraced royal was stripped of his titles and honours due to his links to Epstein. Aside from Congressman Garcia, the letter was co-signed by 15 other Democratic committee members.
It was released today, November 6 and requested a response by November 20.
Congressman Suhas Subramanyam said: “After hearing from Epstein’s victims and public reporting of leaked documents, it is vital that Andrew cooperates with the ongoing investigation. If he is innocent, then he can clear his name.
“And if not, our investigation will show that, and the victims will receive long-overdue justice. The Royal Family’s actions stripping Andrew of his titles show there is more to this story. Ranking Member Garcia and I will not stop pushing for answers and accountability.”
The letter to Andrew read: “It has been publicly reported that your friendship with Mr Epstein began in 1999 and that you remained close through and after his 2008 conviction for procuring minors for prostitution. It has also been reported that you travelled with Epstein to his New York residence, the Queen’s residence at Balmoral, and to Mr Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands, where you have been accused of abusing minors.
“This close relationship with Mr Epstein, coupled with the recently revealed 2011 email exchange in which you wrote to him ‘we are in this together,’ further confirms our suspicion that you may have valuable information about the crimes committed by Mr Epstein and his co-conspirators.”
Andrew has tainted the reputation of the Royal Family through his association with Epstein, and for many years has been dogged by allegations that he sexually abused Virginia Giuffre after she was trafficked by the financier.
He has strenuously denied the allegations.
The former prince has agreed to leave Royal Lodge and is set to move to the King’s private Sandringham estate in Norfolk sometime in the new year as he begins his internal exile.
Earlier in October, he announced he would stop using his Duke of York title, although he remained a prince, ahead of the publication of the memoirs of the late Ms Giuffre, who claimed she was sexually assaulted three times by Andrew, including when she was 17.
Andrew paid millions to settle a civil sexual assault case with her in 2022 without accepting any liability. He has always denied any wrongdoing.
Today, the King officially stripped him of both his HRH style and his prince title by issuing a Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, which was published in The Gazette, the UK’s official public record, by the Crown Office.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called for Andrew to heed the invitation.
He said on X: “It’s right Andrew Mountbatten Windsor appears before US Congress over his links to Epstein and his victims.
“He should also give evidence to our Parliament. The public deserve answers and full transparency about this scandal.”
Epstein took his own life in a New York prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking and conspiracy charges.
