A lip reader has picked up on a question Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor asked Prince William at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral last year.
At the event, Andrew and William were spotted standing next to each other and Andrew was spotted saying something to William. Now, one lip-reader has claimed she picked up what Andrew was asking as she reveals the words he uttered to the future monarch.
Forensic lip reader Nicola Hickling, reports the Mail, has suggested that the former Duke of York asked William: “I’ve learnt from what I’ve done, but before I forget, and if I can, I’d like to ask if you can forgive?”
The interaction came at a time when questions continued to be asked about Andrew’s interactions with the late dead paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019. Andrew continues to deny any wrongdoing relating to his connection with Epstein.
A few months after this interaction at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral Andrew would be stripped of his titles before he was kicked out of his home at Royal Lodge, moving to the more modest Marsh Farm on the Sandringham estate.
According to the lip reader, Andrew’s question came after he had had said hello both to Prince William and his wife Princess Catherine.
Ms Hickling added that after Andrew had made his initial introduction that William “looks a little bit uneasy” before noting that he did not get a reply from his plea. The funeral was one of Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson’s last public appearances of 2025.
In February 2026, on his 66th birthday, Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office after allegations that he shared sensitive information with Epstein whilst serving as a trade envoy for the United Kingdom.
Since his arrest there have been suggestions from some political figures such as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for him to be removed from the line of succession. Last month the Australian government said it would back the move.
Following his arrest Andrew was later released under investigation. In a statement released on the day of his arrest, February 19, Thames Valley police said: Thames Valley Police is able to provide an update in relation to an investigation into the offence of misconduct in public office.
“On Thursday we arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
“The arrested man has now been released under investigation. We can also confirm that our searches in Norfolk have now concluded.”
