Angelina Jolie is championing free speech and has confessed her advocacy stems from no longer being able to “recognize” the United States, which she had already ‘planned’ to leave.
The 50 year old Hollywood star made these remarks while promoting her latest film, Couture, at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain on September 21. “Anything, anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms, I think, is very dangerous,” Angelina explained.
The Wanted actress revealed that these were “very, very heavy times” as she addressed the volatile political atmosphere in America. Her comments come just days after Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended “indefinitely” for remarks Jimmy made on air about the individual accused of killing Charlie Kirk.
“I don’t, at this time, recognize my country. I’ve always lived internationally. My family is international. My life, my world view, is equal [and] united,” Angelina continued.
“I think these are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. So I’ll be careful in a press conference… But these are very, very heavy time,” she added.
The Mr. and Mrs. Smith veteran has been extremely outspoken on political and global matters. Nevertheless, her recent perspective on what’s unfolding in the United States has ignited discussions online.
One individual posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, said, “I’m so glad she’s not a part of this country since she lives internationally away from it. “.
Another disagreed: “She’s absolutely correct.”
A third person chimed in: “Nobody of intelligence cares what she thinks or feels. She’s shown her true self.”
Angelina previously served as a special envoy for the United Nations’ refugee aid agency from 2012 to 2022, having been associated with the organization since 2001.
In 2018, she hinted at a potential shift into politics, stating that she would “always go” where she’s “needed,” and adding, “I don’t know if I’m fit for politics … but then I’ve also joked that I don’t know if I have a skeleton left in my closet.”
She pointed to her work with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner as evidence of her ability to excel in the governmental sphere.
“I’m also able to work with governments,” Angelina stated. “So I sit in a very interesting place of being able to get a lot done, without a title and without it being about myself or my policies.”
Angelina has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump‘s policies since his first term in office, which spanned from 2016 to 2020.
She authored an op-ed for The New York Times, in which she wrote: “We must never allow our values to become the collateral damage of a search for greater security. Shutting our door to refugees or discriminating among them is not our way, and does not make us safer.”
