Angelina Jolie’s latest film has landed a lukewarm response from critics. The R-rated drama currently holds a disappointing score on Rotten Tomatoes. While the movie brings together a respected filmmaker and an acclaimed cast, early reviews suggest it has failed to make the impact many expected.
Angelina Jolie’s Couture struggles to win over critics
Set during Paris Fashion Week, Couture follows Maxine Walker, an American filmmaker played by Angelina Jolie. As Maxine navigates the high-pressure world of fashion, she crosses paths with women from different backgrounds who are all trying to shape their own futures. The experience pushes her toward a personal reckoning as she reflects on the choices that have defined her life.
Directed by Alice Winocour, the film features Jolie alongside Anyier Anei, Ella Rumpf, Louis Garrel, Vincent Lindon, and Garance Marillier. Despite the strong cast, many reviewers felt the movie never fully develops its characters or themes.
Rachel Ho of Exclaim! described the film as a “vapid exercise,” while David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter argued that the characters never gain enough depth to make the story truly meaningful. Christopher Llewellyn Reed of Film Festival Today also criticized the narrative, saying its multiple storylines feel underdeveloped and fail to leave a lasting impact.
Not every review was entirely negative. Sean Boelman of FandomWire wrote that the film is not the disaster some early festival reactions suggested, though he felt it never reaches the emotional heights of Winocour’s previous work. Robert Daniels of Screen International singled out Jolie’s performance, calling it one of the most “vulnerable” turns of her career.
Other critics took issue with the film’s portrayal of the fashion industry. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called the movie “shallow,” while fellow Guardian critic Benjamin Lee argued that it makes the fashion world appear “deathly dull.” Richard Lawson of IndieWire summed up the experience as an uneven mix of melodrama and sleek European style, adding that at least the film’s costumes leave a strong impression.
Couture currently holds a 58% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
