The North Carolina-based indie-folk singer-songwriter Anjimile Chithambo released his acclaimed album The King in 2023, and he dropped the gorgeous one-off single “Auld Lang Syne II” back in November. Today, Anjimile announces plans to follow The King with You’re Free To Go, the new album that he recorded with big-deal indie producer Brad Cook. Anjimile spent a few years working on the songs from the record, which touches on subjects like transition and non-monogamy.
You’re Free To Go features contributions from musicians like Hippo Campus’ Nathan Stocker and Bon Iver’s Matt McCaughan. Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam, a big influence on Anjimile, makes an appearance. Lead single “Like You Really Mean It” isn’t as straight-up folky as some of Anjimile’s music. It’s got some chugging guitars and a softly insistent pulse in its drums. The Caity Arthur-directed video is heavy on fuzzy VHS-glow roller-disco nostalgia.
In a press release, Anjimile says, “I wrote this to make my girlfriend want to give me a kiss. We live about an hour apart, and I was just by myself thinking about her. Thinking about wanting a kiss. What could I do to get a kiss from my sweetheart? Write a song about it! Anyway, it worked.” Check out the video and the You’re Free To Go tracklist below.
