ANNAPOLIS – The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is proud to recognize May as Older Americans Month (OAM), celebrating the rich contributions of local older adults and promoting resources that support independent, connected, and vibrant lives.
Every May, communities across the nation honor older adults for the invaluable insight, experience, and dedication they bring to society. As volunteers, mentors, educators, and advocates, older adults continuously strengthen Anne Arundel County’s economy, culture, and neighborhoods through intergenerational relationships and civic engagement.
This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” emphasizes prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility. The initiative encourages older adults to take an active role in their well-being through proactive screenings, daily movement, social connection, and self-advocacy to maintain their independence.
“Older Americans Month is a powerful reminder that aging isn’t about slowing down; it’s about stepping into a vibrant new chapter of growth and possibility,” said Karrisa Kelly, Director of the Department of Aging and Disabilities. “This month, we celebrate the incredible contributions of our older adults while reinforcing our commitment to helping them thrive. By championing your health today, proactively improving your lifestyle, and thoughtfully preparing for better longevity, we can ensure that our later years are defined by vitality, purpose, and independence.”
Community Celebration Event
In partnership with the Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department, the community is invited to celebrate Older Americans Month at a special event featuring refreshments, live entertainment, a resources fair, health screenings, and raffle prizes.
