Anne Hathaway says production on Princess Diaries 3 is progressing after a script rewrite and story breakthrough
A release date has not yet been set for the movie
Julie Andrews has expressed interest in returning, though no cast beyond Hathaway has been confirmed yet
Anne Hathaway is sharing an update on the status of the highly anticipated Princess Diaries 3.
Two years after the project was first officially announced, Hathaway, 43, who starred in the first two movies as Mia Thermopolis, a regular teen who finds out she’s the princess of a small European country, says production is “moving in the right direction.”
“I can say I think we had a story breakthrough,” she shared during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy. “I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”

However, a release date has not yet been set, nor has a shooting schedule, as Hathaway is currently pregnant with her third child (she shares sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6, with husband Adam Shulman).
“I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make Princess Diaries 3, ” Hathaway added.
The first Princess Diaries movie was released in 2001 and marked Hathaway’s breakthrough into Hollywood. Three years later, it was followed by The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which saw its main cast return, including Julie Andrews as Mia’s grandmother, the Queen of Genovia, Heather Matarazzo as Mia’s best friend Lilly and Héctor Elizondo as Mia’s right-hand man and butler Joe.

Both movies were directed by Garry Marshall, who died in 2016.
In 2024, Disney hired Adele Lim (Joy Ride) as the director for the threequel. However, since then, updates have been scarce.
Producer Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two movies, shared an update with PEOPLE in June, saying that she was “more than hopeful” that the movie would be moving forward soon.
“We had hoped to be shooting this year,” she said. “So, it’s coming. We’re intent upon making it happen. And we’re excited that the people are excited. Every time something happens and we get the thing, it’s like, ‘Yay, okay, keep going!’ ”
The second movie ends with Mia becoming Queen of Genovia after making a rousing speech that convinces parliament to let her ascend to the throne without being married. Still, she has a budding romance with the charming Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine).

A cast has not yet been confirmed for Princess Diaries 3 outside of Hathaway, but Andrews, now 90, has previously expressed she’d be interested in returning. In 2024, she told Today she’d “be very happy if we did do another one. But I don’t expect to.”
