Anne Hathaway has revealed she lived with a crippling health condition for a decade that impacted her nervous system before she underwent surgery.
The 43-year-old Devil Wears Prada 2 star opened up about the time in her life when she was “legally blind” in one eye, caused by an early-onset cataract.
A cataract is the clouding of the clear lens in the eye and can be in one or both eyes. It can occur due to ageing, but can also affect younger people, according to Vision Australia.
“I was half blind for 10 years,” she told The New York Times’ podcast called Popcast.
“It impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye, and I wound up getting surgery.
“And I didn’t realise how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum.
“I’ve calmed down since then. I didn’t realise it was actually taxing my nervous system.”
Hathaway went on to describe her current vision as “a miracle”.
“I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day, I wake up and I get to see the way that I do, it’s a miracle,” she continued.
“I actually am like, ‘Oh, two generations back, that wouldn’t have been an option for someone like me.’ So, I actually do feel very connected to that kind of a miracle.”
It comes after the actress in a rare move addressed heavy online speculation she had gotten a face-lift but her youthful appearance was in fact thanks to her hairstylist who created two hidden braids near her temples to give her eye area “a little extra lift.”
In an interview with Elle, the Oscar winner said she wanted to clear the air.

“These are huge medical decisions that people are presuming,” Hathaway said.
“I wanted to show that like, no, I didn’t make a huge medical decision. It’s just two braids.
“We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact, and sometimes what they think is accurate and sometimes it’s not.
“My preference would be to never comment on anything and to just live in the mystery and not draw attention to myself, but the speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there.”
While Hathaway denied undergoing surgery, she added: “I might still get a face-lift someday.”
