As Obsession continues its theatrical run, another horror film could make a big splash at the box office this month. Ahead of its June 19 release, Neon’s newest supernatural horror movie, Leviticus, is quickly gaining attention online from critics and moviegoers. Interestingly, this was something we saw happening to Obsession before it arrived in theaters in May.
Leviticus is written and directed by Australian filmmaker Adrian Chiarella in his feature-length directorial debut. The movie stars Mia Wasikowska, Joe Bird, Stacy Clausen, Ewen Leslie, Nicholas Hope, Jeremy Blewitt, Davida McKenzie, and Edwina Wren. Earlier this year, Neon acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the film in a seven-figure deal.
Why Leviticus could become the next Obsession
When Leviticus had its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, it received an impressive near-perfect approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of writing, the upcoming film already has a 95% Tomatometer score, making it this year’s highest-rated movie to date. It managed to surpass Obsession’s current rating after the Blumhouse-produced film dropped from 95% to 94% RT score.
Just with ratings, we’re already seeing Leviticus’ huge potential to match or even outperform Obsession. Early reviews described the film as terrifyingly creepy and heartbreakingly emotional. The queer horror romance is brought to life by compelling performances from Bird and Clausen. Just like Obsession, the new film is also a supernatural horror movie that transforms love and desire into something twisted. However, in Leviticus, the story revolves around young star-crossed lovers who’ll get targeted by a dark entity that hunts down its victims by taking on the form of what the person desires the most. Besides its intriguing premise, the new film will also delve into homophobia and the traumatic consequences of conversion therapy, adding another layer to its horrific story.
Trailers and fan edits for Leviticus have started going viral on social media, garnering millions of views from excited fans who are drawn to Bird and Clausen’s characters and chemistry. This could potentially generate word-of-mouth marketing for the film, which was actually a main contributing factor to the massive success of Obsession. If Leviticus did manage to replicate Obsession’s success, it wouldn’t be a surprise if horror dominates this year’s awards season.
