A guest on Antiques Roadshow has tragically died just years after a life-altering appraisal on the program.

The beloved antiques series has captured hearts nationwide and quickly established itself as essential viewing since debuting in 1979.

The young father’s passing was revealed as the American adaptation of the show earned an Emmy nod in the Outstanding Structured Reality Program category.

While the US version announced its nomination, the program’s official social media account shared a touching story about how one evaluation completely changed a family’s circumstances in a single night.

PBS officials shared a clip from a special episode that looked back at some of its most memorable segments, highlighting a piece featuring American stoneware expert David Rago.

Back in 2005, he encountered a stunned guest named Tom, who had brought in an 1880 jug that had been handed down through his family.

He told the specialist, “This piece belonged to my grandmother, and when she sold her house, the grandkids and the kids could choose different things. This is the piece that I always wanted, so my name was on this one for a long time.”

David then evaluated the enormous jug at a staggering $65,000 to $85,000 before revealing what the collectible actually sold for at auction. He told viewers, “That was filmed on the Saturday.

“On Monday morning, the phone rang. It was Tom, our guest. He said, ‘Were you serious about the price? Because we could really use some money.’

“And I brought the piece to the Philadelphia Antique Show in April of 2005. The first person in the door purchased it for $110,000. I remember calling Tom that night. They told me that for the first time in their lives, they had enough in their bank account to now apply to adopt a child, a baby boy from Guatemala.”

Tragically, the lucky guest only got to experience fatherhood for four years before he passed away at just 46 years old. The expert went on, “The bittersweet part of the story is that, sadly, four years later, Tom passed away at the age of 46.

“Carol, his wife, had written to me and told me about it and thanking me for the moments and the good times that Tom had on Antiques Roadshow, and that their wonderful, adorable Henry was now in their lives. It’s a story of what Roadshow can do to change someone’s life.”

In a subsequent episode, the expert was reunited with the family and young Henry, who has now graduated from high school, and even brought along the family pitcher they had sold to finance their son’s adoption.

It didn’t take long for viewers to flood the comments section expressing their devastation for the family while celebrating the incredible impact Antiques Roadshow can deliver.

One viewer commented, “Gosh you guys hit me with the needle. That money being used for the adoption and then telling me Tom died. Talk about a one-two punch of emotions.”

Another agreed, “What a heartwarming and tragically heartbreaking story. Thank you for sharing it with all of us. I know it touched others as much as it did me.”
