Movie buffs don’t catch much of Martin Scorsese in front of the camera outside of the occasional TV cameo (see: The Studio) or TikToks quizzing the great director on Gen Z slang. According to Apple TV+, that’s because he’s been gearing up to release a five-part documentary on his life’s work.

Titled Mr. Scorsese, the five-part documentary plans to offer “unrestricted access to Scorsese’s private archives,” featuring interviews with Cate Blanchett, Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jodie Foster, Mick Jagger, Margot Robbie, Thelma Schoonmaker, Paul Schrader, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, and, of course, Scorsese himself. Mr. Scorsese premieres on Apple TV+ on 17 October.

The first trailer (above) features a story from Spielberg about how the director once called him in a panic about Taxi Driver. “You got to help me,” Scorsese told him. “They want me to cut out all the blood.” Scorsese also threatened to buy a gun if the studio held his rough cuts hostage, though it was only a threat.

Mr. Scorsese is directed by Rebecca Miller, who previously directed Arthur Miller: Writer—a 2017 documentary about her father, the Pulitzer prize–winning playwright who wrote Death of a Salesman, All My Sons, The Crucible, and more.

“This project is a filmmaker’s dream, to have had such access to legends of the industry, from Marty himself to his prolific collaborator,” Miller said in a statement for the trailer’s release. “I was honored he trusted me to create this documentary, which I believe will resonate with everyone from dedicated Scorsese fans to anyone who has grappled with failure and reached for the stars. I’m excited to share a sneak peek of Mr. Scorsese, which includes the true version of a mythic, never-before-told story about Taxi Driver, and how thanks to Marty’s perseverance and dedication to his art, the film retained its integrity and went on to become one of the most culturally significant films of all time.”

Watch the full trailer above. Then you have approximately two months to watch Martin Scorsese’s full filmography (27 films?!) before Mr. Scorsese premieres. Easy, right?
