A haircut, even if it’s botched, can feel incredibly personal if it’s by someone you love. On Thursday evening, Mexican singer-songwriter Arath Herce released his melancholic single “Nadie Me Corta el Pelo Como Tú,” and its reminiscing video exclusively with Rolling Stone.

“During the pandemic, when every hair salon was closed, I had to accept the chance of being ruined — by a haircut — at the hands of the person I love,” Herce tells Rolling Stone. “She did the best she could. In the end, we had to embrace those imperfections and laugh. The next morning, when I looked in the mirror, even with those crooked lines, I felt loved. That was the spark that brought this song.”

The Bruno Bancalari-directed video for the single, carried by gentle guitar strums and soft piano, shows a montage of Herce performing the track while having his hair cut by a love interest. Toward the end, it shifts to clips of others — including a cute pup — getting their own fresh cuts.

“Nadie Me Corta el Pelo” is set to be a part of Herce’s upcoming album following the releases of singles “Musas en Mí” and “Me Levanté de la Cama.” He says of the upcoming record: “The common thread between this song and the rest of the album may be the observation of those little things that happen in a normal life.”

The Veracruz-born singer’s last album, Balboa, dropped in 2021, featuring his biggest solo hit, “Quiero Sentirlo Todo” and “Miedo.” Rolling Stone en Español included the star in its list of Future 25 last year. “His music is characterized by his personal and sincere lyrics that tend to paint autobiographical scenes so vividly that you can almost immerse yourself in them as you listen,” read the review.
