Ashley Tisdale French has the internet abuzz after opening up about her “toxic mom group,” but it isn’t her first rodeo in the world of celebrity feuds.
French wrote about “breaking up with” a group of mom friends in a January 5 essay for The Cut, leading to speculation that she was referring to a friend group she once appeared close with that included Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore, and Meghan Trainor.
Duff’s husband, Matthew Koma, only fueled that speculation when he posted an edited version of French’s headline in The Cut, in which he wrote, “When You’re The Most Self-Obsessed Tone Deaf Person On Earth, Other Moms Tend To Shift Focus To Their Actual Toddlers.”
However, before the buzz around French’s alleged falling out with Moore, Duff and Trainor, fans were once focused on the demise of one of her other long-standing friendships.
For years, there has been speculation that French and Vanessa Hudgens are no longer friends.

The High School Musical co-stars seemed to be the best of pals after working together on the 2006 movie and subsequent sequels. In 2014, Hudgens served as one of French’s bridesmaids when she married Christopher French.
“I’m a loyal person,” Hudgens said of their lasting friendship in a 2017 interview with Women’s Health. “She’s one of those girlfriends who will be my friend forever.”
However, by late 2021, their friendship appeared to have waned. Notably, French maintained a close relationship with Austin Butler after his 2020 breakup with Hudgens, penning a birthday tribute to him on Instagram in 2021, writing, “I am beyond proud of you and everything you’re accomplishing but most importantly proud of the person you are,” per E! News. French and Butler were seen hanging out as recently as July 2025.
When Hudgens married Cole Tucker in 2023, French did not attend her wedding.
Then, in 2024, French gave a lukewarm response when she was asked if she still hung out with Hudgens during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. “I haven’t seen her in a long time,” she said, per Entertainment Tonight. “Obviously, she’s working, I’m working. I have a daughter. So it’s like, you know, she has a full-time job.”
The pair still follow each other on social media, and Hudgens has never addressed their alleged falling out.
