In 2011, artist Beili Liu presented The Mending Project, a large scale installation and live art performance featuring 1,500 suspended Chinese scissors arranged above her workspace. Visitors entering the gallery were invited to cut small pieces from a white cloth and hand them to Liu, who carefully stitched every fragment together by hand throughout the exhibition. Over time, the growing patchwork spread across the floor and became part of the evolving installation itself.
The performance focused on patience, repetition, and the quiet process of repair through traditional hand sewing techniques. By combining suspended objects, fabric, and live participation, Liu transformed simple materials into an immersive visual environment that explored connection, craftsmanship, and collective creation through slow, continuous work.
