Something you may not know about me: I’m almost always in the middle of one book or another, usually a novel.
Currently it’s the Charles Dickens epic “Bleak House” for some reason, and before that it was Gary Shteyngart’s troubling yet compelling “Vera, or Faith.”
Speaking of books, the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Department of English is bringing in a North Carolina author for its Buckner Lecture Series.
David Joy, who lives in Jackson County west of Asheville, will speak at the free Buckner Lecture 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Lumina Theatre in the Fisher Student Center on campus.
The author of five novels, most recently 2023’s “Those We Thought We Knew,” Joy has also written a memoir (“Growing Gills: A Fly Fisherman’s Journey”) and co-edited a collection of writing about fly fishing. His work is centered on Appalachia, and in 2023 his debut novel “Where All Light Tends to Go” was made into a film, “Devil’s Peak,” starring Billy Bob Thornton and Robin Wright.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, Joy will take part in a free, book-club like-discussion of “Those We Thought We Knew” at Pomegranate Books in Wilmington.
Now, let’s see what else is going down in the Port City.
Weekend weather outlook
Should be an overcast and rainy weekend with mild temps, at least at first. Cloudy Friday with highs in the mid-70s. Over a 50% chance of rain Saturday and Sunday, with a high in the low 60s Saturday and high 50s Sunday, getting down into the upper 30s Sunday night.
Go | See | Do
This weekend in Wilmington brings a nice mix of events, including a couple of festivals and even a parade. There are opportunities to catch some live tunes, and we’ve got a ton of good theater on stage. Full list below.
The Dish with Port City Foodies
A popular Wilmington restaurant has been listed for sale by its owner. Food and dining writer Allison Ballard has the details. Plus, a scratch-made biscuit restaurant announces a new Brunswick County location, and a Wilmington chef organizes a soup fundraiser to help a friend with medical expenses.
Getting to know Wilmington actors
We’re in the middle of Oscars season, and while no Wilmington-shot productions scored Oscar nominations this year, it’s as good a time as any to take a look at some of the best-known actors to have called Wilmington home — including one with a small but memorable role in a 2026 Best Picture nominee.
News you can use
A movie sequel to a massively popular TV series is set to shoot in Wilmington. Plus, the future is uncertain for a historic building that housed a recently closed brewery, and the N.C. Azalea Festival announces a concert headliner.
