Bruce Springsteen movie starring Jeremy Allen White films at Stone Pony
‘Deliver Me from Nowhere,’ about the making of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska,” filmed at the Stone Pony on Jan 11, 2025
Asbury Park, it’s time for your close-up.
Multiple city landmarks, including the Stone Pony, the beach and the Carousel biulding, are featured in the new trailer for the Bruce Springsteen biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.”
“I think Bruce is afraid of what’s coming and he feels guilty leaving behind the world he knows,” says Jeremy Strong as Springsteen manager Jon Landau in a voice over as Jeremy Allen White as stands in an off-season Carousel.
The new trailer was released on Sept. 15.
The upcoming biopic frames the Boss’ recording of his 1982 stark lo-fi classic “Nebraska” as a mission of self-repair. He’s on the verge of his “Born in the USA” superstardom, but he’s not quite ready to take that leap yet.
“I don’t have to tell you, we have to hit it out of the park with the next record,” says a record executive. “Bruce Springsteen’s on a rocket ship — we don’t want to miss that window.”
Not so fast, says Landau.
“He’s channeling something deeply personal,” Landau says. “In this office, my office, we believe in Bruce Springsteen.”
Filming took place in Asbury Park in December and January, starting with a shoot at Frank’s Deli and Restaurant on Main Street, which is not in the trailer. The real Springsteen often attended the shoots.
“‘Nebraska’ is where Bruce chose truth over expectation — a choice that still reverberates through everything he’s written since,” said director Scott Cooper in a statement. “At that crossroads, he could have chased the bright lights and the roar of arenas, but instead he turned inward, armed only with silence, a four-track recorder, and the courage to confront himself.
“For him to trust me with telling that story — the most vulnerable chapter of his life — is the greatest honor I’ve ever had as a filmmaker.”
The film also shot in Freehold in early January.
“This film takes a couple years out of my life and looks at them very closely, a time when I made ‘Nebraska’ and went through some personal difficulties,” said Springsteen in a statement. “I’m so appreciative of Jeremy Allen White and the entire cast for their wonderful and moving performances — and Scott Cooper, one of the most generous collaborators I’ve ever worked with.”
Paul Walter Hauser plays guitar tech Mike Batlan; Odessa Young plays Springsteen love interest Faye; Stephen Graham is Springsteen’s father, Douglas Springsteen; and Gaby Hoffman is Springsteen’s mother, Adele Springsteen. David Krumholtz plays Columbia Record executive Al Teller.
The film is based on the book “Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska” by musician Warren Zanes, who also played at the Stone Pony in the 1980s with his band the Del Fuegos.
“Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,” from Disney’s 20th Century Studios, will be in movie theaters on Friday, Oct. 24.
