It’s a bitter pill Bad Bunny fans in the U.S. will have to swallow.
Those fans were initially left puzzled when they noticed the musician left the United States off of his upcoming “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” world tour.
To clear the air, in a new interview with i-D published Wednesday, the Puerto-Rican crooner said the decision to skip the U.S. was tied to the Trump administration’s recent mass deportations targeting Latinos.
When interviewer Suzy Exposito asked if the decision was “out of concern” for his Latino fans, the entertainer responded, “Man, honestly, yes.”
“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate — I’ve performed there many times,” Bad Bunny explained. “All of [the shows] have been successful. All of them have been magnificent.”
To fans all over, his residency in his native Puerto Rico is incredibly appealing because it welcomes fans from over the world to his island, which includes many from the United States who had never visited La Isla del Encanto.
His residency, No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí, is set to conclude on Sept. 14 after 30 shows, which kicked off since mid-July.
“I’ve enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the US, but specifically, for a residency here in Puerto Rico, when we are an incorporated territory of the U.S. … People from the U.S. could come here to see the show,” Bad Bunny said. “Latinos and Puerto Ricans of the United States could also travel here, or to any part of the world.”
“But there was the issue of — like, [expletive] ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about,” he added.
The “Monaco” singer’s distrust in ICE and the Trump administration is no secret.
Earlier this summer, he seemingly saw an ICE raid in Puerto Rico and turned to social media to post what he captured on video: “They came here … [expletive], instead of letting the people alone and working.”
The tour “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” will begin on Nov. 21 in Santo Domingo before traveling across Latin America through late February.
