Wilson Arts will present one the most acclaimed groups in modern bluegrass as part of Boykin Series 28. Balsam Range will be performing live at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Edna Boykin Cultural Center in downtown Wilson.
With roots planted firmly in the mountains of western North Carolina, Balsam Range has spent nearly two decades blending technical virtuosity with soul-stirring songwriting, earning them a reputation as one of the genre’s most compelling and decorated ensembles. What began in 2007 as a casual kitchen jam quickly blossomed into a nationally celebrated bluegrass phenomenon. Today, the group — Caleb Smith (guitar, vocals), Tim Surrett (bass, dobro, vocals), Alan Bibey (mandolin, vocals) and Marc Pruett (banjo) — continues to push its craft forward while honoring the traditions that inspired them.
Their list of accolades is as impressive as their sound: 13 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, including multiple wins for Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, Vocal Group of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and more. With 14 albums to their name and numerous chart-topping singles, Balsam Range has graced major festival stages nationwide and earned repeated invitations to the Grand Ole Opry.
In 2025, the band welcomed renowned Kentucky musician Don Rigsby as a special guest on many tour dates. A celebrated vocalist and fiddler known for his soaring tenor and impeccable musicianship, Rigsby adds a dynamic new layer to Balsam Range’s signature sound.
