Following previous events undertaken by Another Cheap Thrill Ltd, the council has granted an application allowing for alcohol, music, and cultural events.
Large-scale live music events at the Beacon Centre car park have been capped at three times a year following a successful licensing application, despite local concerns.
North Tyneside Council’s licensing subcommittee has granted an alcohol and events licence to Another Cheap Thrill Ltd to operate on floors 4-8 of the Beacon Centre car park in North Shields. The company has previously organised ticketed events at the car park on Saville Street through temporary event notices.
Geoff Kirkland, the firm’s director, told the committee that the licence would allow Another Cheap Thrill to diversify the events it can hold, including markets, etc.
The council’s environmental health representatives stipulated that the venue would require a series of conditions to avoid negatively impacting neighbours, including, but not limited to, illuminated escape routes, a noise monitoring system, and an incident log.
The council’s environmental health department also stated that an event held in April last year had generated noise that slightly exceeded guidelines.
However, the application was objected to by resident Mr Dave Thompson, who expressed concerns about noise levels and public safety. Mr Thompson said: “I am 70 years old, and a lot of the people around are older; there are a number of old folks homes around there.
“We feel intimidated by this; it’s frightening, it makes North Shields into a no-go area when there are events on.”
Mr Kirkwood said: “I just believe that using everything that environmental health wants in place and acknowledging what happened previously, I feel that we can address the concerns. I’m not arguing against his concerns.”
For larger-scale events, the premises would still have to apply for the council to sign off on the proposal. The licence permits the sale of alcohol from 10am to 10pm and, for events, including recorded music, dance performances , or similar cultural events, from 5pm to 10pm Monday to Friday and from 12 pm to 10pm on weekends or bank holidays.
