Somehow, it’s been nearly seven years since the last Beck album. In the waning weeks of 2019, Beck Hansen released Hyperspace, a forward-thinking pop-rock album that counted Pharrell Williams among its core production team. Between touring, collaborations, and special events, he’s never really gone away in the interim, but not until April single “Ride Lonesome” was he back in rollout mode.
“Ride Lonesome” brought Beck back into the orchestral-acoustic balladry of Sea Change and Morning Phase. He’s since shared an alternate version of the song featuring Sierra Ferrell. Today he reveals that Ride Lonesome is also the title of his new LP. Produced by Beck and mixed by Nigel Godrich, it’s coming in September. Beck shared this statement:
My new album Ride Lonesome is coming out this fall. The musicians from my original touring and recording band that I recorded Sea Change, Morning Phase and Mutations with — Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner— reconvened with me at my favorite studio (Room B at United studios in Hollywood). We had Nigel Godrich, who worked on Sea Change and Mutations with us mixing all the songs. It had been a decade since we went in the studio and recorded Morning Phase. This time It felt like the playing and the chemistry had evolved and deepened— a sound that’s come together over the decades of working together.
While we were revisiting a musical and physical place, it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way.
Today Beck has released a second single to go along with the album announcement. “In The Night” is warm yet haunting, a folk-rock hymn graced by a gorgeous string arrangement. The song arrives with a music video starring Denis Lavant, directed by Mikai Karl and produced by Ryan Smale. Watch below.
