After nearly 20 years, fans of the hit TV show “Friends” can finally find out what happened to beloved character Joey Tribbiani…. sort of. Earlier this month, the official “Friends” YouTube page began posting episodes of the show’s spinoff series “Joey.”
The catch? The final eight episodes posted have never been seen before in the U.S. as “Joey” was cancelled by NBC before they could air. “Joey” starred Matt LeBlanc as the title character who has moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career following the events at the end of “Friends.”
“East or west coast, Joey is still, well, Joey. 🙃 Did you know that the final eight episodes of #Joey Season 2 never aired in the U.S.? Now, 21 years later, catch the remaining episodes exclusively on the #FRIENDS YouTube channel!” reads a post on the show’s official Instagram.
“Joey” premiered on Sept. 9, 2004, just four months after the “Friends” finale aired. Despite strong ratings to start, “Joey” failed to attract a long-term audience. Ratings steadily declined throughout the first season and failed to recover during the second season.
On March 7, 2006, the show was placed on hiatus with just one episode airing after that in the U.S. The show was cancelled by NBC in May 2006. Despite being pulled from airing in the U.S., the final eight episodes were shown internationally.
Along with LeBlanc, “Joey” starred Jennifer Coolidge, Drea de Matteo, Paulo Costanzo and Andrea Anders. In total, the show ran for 46 episodes.
While “Joey” was a flop, “Friends” remains one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. In 2019, HBO Max paid a reported $425 million to stream “Friends” exclusively on its service. Reruns of the show continue to air on multiple TV channels both domestically and internationally.
