Joan Van Ark, Michele Lee and Donna Mills recently reunited at the Southfork Experience for a panel discussion about their beloved soap opera, where they opened up about the exit of co-star Constance McCashin that left the entire cast reeling.
When asked about the moment McCashin’s character Laura Avery Sumner was written out after eight years on the show in 1987, Mills, 84, revealed an unexpected behind-the-scenes story.
“We were invited for a weekend, the whole cast, to come to David Jacobs’ house and sit around and ad lib on the death of Laura,” she recalled. “We came as our characters and each of us reacted and acted and spent a whole weekend talking about it.”
But here’s the twist, cameras were rolling the entire time. “We paid no attention to the cameras, honestly, but for instance, if Joan and I walked together outside the house, there would be someone that would follow us, and so it was finding our voice,” Lee noted.
They weren’t just acting — they were genuinely “mourning the soul of the character” while trying to capture “moments and exchanges that would be real, that would be gentle.”
Laura’s death from a brain tumor became the centerpiece of the show’s milestone 200th episode, featuring what many consider one of television’s most authentic funeral scenes.
The impact of McCashin’s departure continues to resonate with fans decades later. Mills dropped another surprising revelation.
McCashin remains “the number one requested person that people want to hear from and see” on their podcast, “We’re Knot Done Yet.”
“I think many people were really bummed when she left the show,” Mills explained, confirming what longtime viewers have suspected.
“It isn’t a good goodbye,” Van Ark noted. “It would never be with an actress of her stature, but it leaves a scar in a tiny way, and she was invaluable.”
Mills shared that McCashin was “very hurt” by the executives’ decision to remove her character — a move reportedly driven by efforts to reduce production costs.
