Fans of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress might want to make the trek to the Magic Kingdom in Florida pretty soon: the company said it’s shutting the attraction down in July for a major overhaul.
Currently, the show takes the audience on a tour of a typical American home at different points in the 20th century as an animatronic family shows off the progress of each era.
It starts at the turn of the 20th century, heads to the 1920s, then the late 40s, followed by a jump to the turn of the newest century. That final scene has elements that have aged well ― such as voice-activated appliances ― and some that haven’t, like references to “car phones” and “laser discs” as well as a virtual reality video game with rudimentary graphics.
The company said in a news release that the revamped show will begin with an animatronic of Walt Disney himself introducing the attraction he developed for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York.
The company currently has another animatronic of its founder at its “Walt Disney ― A Magical Life” attraction at Disneyland in California.
The Carousel family will return in the following scenes, which will now be set in the summer 1969 as they gather to watch the moon landing, Halloween of 1985, New Year’s Eve 1999 and a finale “in the distant future, in an out-of-this-world home.”

The company said the revamped attraction will have some callbacks to the one fans know and love, including the song “There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” playing between scenes as well as Uncle Orville in the bathroom complaining that there’s “no privacy around here.”
The final day for the current version of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is set for July 5. The attraction will reopen at some point in 2027.
