Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco were friendly collaborators for years before they began dating in private during the summer of 2023. Gomez went public with their relationship that December—but not before having a serious conversation with Blanco and giving him an out if he wanted it.
The music producer spoke to El País’s Icon magazine about what Gomez asked him before she revealed to her fans that they were dating.
“We kept our relationship private for a long time, about eight or nine months,” he said in the Spanish interview. “And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends.’ And then I said, ‘You know what? Screw it.’ We’re lucky because we both have friends and family we’ve known since before all this, and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love.”
He also spoke about his own experience with fame, including the moment he started to gain traction as a producer. “It was between 2018 and 2019,” he recalled. “I released my song [‘Eastside,’ his first solo track] and it became really popular. So I started to get a little bit famous. And from there, things got really intense. I remember talking to my manager and telling him I wanted to slow things down a bit. That same month I started dating Selena. Then it was like what I was going through got a rocket boost: I was launched into the air. She’s been dealing with this her whole life, so it’s something we have to face together.”
He called fame generally “a necessary evil for the things I love, including my wife.”
Blanco and Gomez ultimately got married in September 2025. He told Interview that he knew shortly after they began dating that he wanted to propose.
“The second time we hung out, our second date, I was like, ‘Wait, does she like me?’ I was clueless,” he prefaced. “From then on, it was easy. You know when you think you met the right person, you’re like, ‘Oh my god.’ But it feels so different. The second we started hanging out, I was like, ‘This is my wife.’ I was telling my mom, ‘This is the girl I’m going to marry.’”
