Best new music: Babehoven feel right at home on ‘Blue Around You’

Babehoven is the Hudson, New York-based project of Maya Bon and Ryan Albert, who recorded new single “Blue Around You” in some curiously named spaces upstate: The Chicken Shack and 12 Lb Genius.

Famed “less is more” producer Phil Weinrobe (who famously worked with Big Thief) helped capture the band’s twangy, indie folk rock energy that’s full of sweet pensiveness, and added a few new layers. A fleet of musical friends aided those efforts, creating a genuine and homey appeal.

To capture the song’s true nature, it was recorded live with no playback or headphones, with the feel of the room being as much an instrument as the fiddle that threads the song together.
