The opening night of Jay-Z’s Yankee Stadium show was full of surprises. The first of a three-night run honoring 30 years of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, the evening weaved together the artist’s career-making hits with special appearances from people who have been there with him through it all. And that meant a surprise performance by the one and only Beyoncé.
Joining her husband for the first number of the night, the singer made Mary J. Blige’s part on “Can’t Knock the Hustle” her own, shocking the crowd with her signature stage presence and a dazzling pinstripe suit. The latter, made custom by Giuseppe di Morabito for the occasion, featured a sculpted blazer top with exaggerated shoulders and a plunging neckline. It was paired with matching tailored capris, and both pieces were entirely embellished with crystal stripes, putting a playful, show-stopping spin on a preppy classic.
Stylist Ty Hunter brought out the crystal detailing with diamond necklaces from Messika’s So Move collection and long dangly earrings that peeked out from the wearer’s voluminous curls. To finish, the team picked out pointy black pumps with little ankle straps.
Beyoncé has been on somewhat of a surprise streak, with the unexpected performance coming just a week after she celebrated the reissue of B’Day by dropping a previously-unreleased song, “Morning Dew (Donk).” Here, she kicked off a hefty lineup of guest stars for Jay-Z, including Alicia Keys, Nas, Jaz-O, Memphis Bleek, and her very own daughter. The sweetest surprise of them all, Blue Ivy Carter joined her dad on stage to play the keys for “Feelin’ It.”
