Prairie View A&M University has announced that the father of Houston’s biggest star will be teaching at the HBCU, located about 40 minutes outside of Houston. Dr. Mathew Knowles has been appointed the first-ever Executive-in-Residence, a part of the University’s new Presidential Executive-in-Residence Program that pairs academics and students with business and culture-redefining executives.
Knowles is a record executive, entrepreneur and architect who played a key role in the careers of global icons Beyoncé, Destiny’s Child, and Solange. Knowles has a Ph.D. and degrees in business administration and economics. He’s also taught at universities such as Texas Southern University in Houston and Pepperdine University.
Outside of music, Knowles established profitable collaborative ventures with well-known companies and groups, such as the American Heart Association, Pepsi, Sony Music, Walmart, and McDonald’s. Additionally, Knowles has spearheaded effective marketing initiatives for well-known companies like Samsung, Pepsi, L’Oréal, and House of Deréon Apparel.
Knowles will work with the Department of Languages and Communication and the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to teach four master courses, two each term, during the fall and spring semesters. Topics include a course on entrepreneurship and another on strategic visibility.
In addition, Knowles will conduct two seminars for faculty development during his residency on developing an entrepreneurial attitude, using storytelling, and promoting media innovation and brand strategy.
Beyoncé and her father have a complicated relationship. Their long-standing professional partnership that saw him represent both Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé’s solo career ended in 2011 due to financial disputes and his divorce from her mother, Tina Knowles. Accusations of infidelity and financial misconduct led to the star severing their professional relationship permanently and their personal relationship for some time. Her song “Daddy Lessons” from LEMONADE (a precursor to her country shift with Cowboy Carter) dove into their complicated relationship.
