On July 4, Beyoncé kicked off the holiday with a new song: “Morning Dew (Donk)” marks the 60-day countdown to the anniversary of her album B’Day, which was released in September 2006. The album will be reissued this year with the new track included.
The song was written by Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, The-Dream, and Darius Dixon, and produced by Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams, per a press release. It was released with a lyric video directed by Cliff Watts, using repurposed footage. The entire look and feel of the visuals reads like a tribute to Beyoncé’s passionate fans, who have been waiting patiently for new music since the release of 2024’s Cowboy Carter.
But the lyrics certainly seem like a tribute to something else. Beyoncé sings in the chorus:
“And he said girl, you sexy in the mornin’, you know you turn me on, babe / You know the sun rise for you, give me that mornin’ dew / You know that I wanted you, want your mornin’ / You know the sun rise for you, give me that mornin’ dew / Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’ / Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk.”
The entire song is quite sexy and full of innuendo (that morning dew is not water), but it also seems to be a reflection on a long-term relationship. While the couple has been together for some time and enjoys staying in and watching movies, that sexual spark is still there. And it keeps them feeling young.
“I think I wanna go back to school and have my locker full of pictures of you,” Beyoncé sings. “So give me that “A” in biology, I’m graduatin’ soon.”
In another verse, she adds, “It’s something ‘bout that look you give me/Makin’ me feel that young love inside.”
