While Sony’s universe of films centered around Spider-Man villains crashed and burned, they had significantly more success with their animated Spider-Verse movies. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse released in 2018 and was a solid hit, earning nearly $400 million off a budget of $90 million. The decision was made to split the sequel into two parts, the first of which, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, released in 2023 and racked up a massive $690 million global box office haul.
The third film in the trilogy, Beyond the Spider-Verse, was originally scheduled for 2024, but the release of Part 2 was met with reports of brutal crunch during production, with writer Phil Lord being said to the main culprit behind these troubles. While Sony denied the allegations of difficult working conditions under Lord, the third entry was unceremoniously removed from the release calendar, indicating that maybe there was more to these rumors than just behind-the-scenes whispers.
In any case, Beyond the Spider-Verse was eventually rescheduled for June 7, 2027, but then it was pushed back a few weeks to June 25. But now, according to Deadline, the movie’s been re-rescheduled (again) to June 18, a week earlier.
Father’s Day 2027 is a great day to launch a comic book movie that appeals to both kids and adults. There’s no shortage of Spider-Man media, with video games, movies, cartoons shows, and the Spider-Verse films all having their turn, but after the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse, I’m especially keen to see how it all wraps up… Especially after Across the Spider-Verse teased the idea of Donald Glover getting to play a live-action version of The Prowler. Plus, the sooner Spider-Verse wraps up, the sooner we can get a live action version of Miles Morales in the MCU… Right?
