Morgan Wallen Teases New Song After ‘I’m the Problem’: LISTEN

The top albums from New Music Friday for June 5

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

BILL CALLAHAN – “LONELY CITY”

Bill Callahan has shared a second song from his upcoming My Days of 58, and it’s a tribute to New York City. “Lonely City is a song I’ve been meaning to write for decades,” says Bill. “It has been inside me that long. I tend to focus my writing on humans and the spirit within. So writing about concrete and steel felt like a no go. Like I’m going to write a song about a car next? But of course cities are made by humans so they are human, too. You have a relationship with them, like friends. You get mad at them when you get a parking ticket, you love them when they offer you a nice meal. It’s a song acknowledging all this.”

PEAER – “BAD NEWS”

Peaer’s new album Doppelganger is out in January, and they’ve shared the second single. Peter Katz says, “This song started off as three separate ideas. The Pinback-esque bassline, the chord progression that became the chorus, and the outro. Thom, Jeremy and I worked together to construct this song out of those ideas and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I really wanted to include an Omar Rodriguez-Lopez style guitar solo, too. I’m really happy with how we’ve incorporated our influences on this song especially, while also feeling like it’s the ‘most Peaer’ song to date. Lyrically, the song grew from the resentment I was feeling at the time towards my career as a musician, and also towards myself for further retreating into solitude (‘yeah I’m pretty sure/I’m staying in tonight…’ ‘it must be nice/to make what you like/and have everyone approve’). Overall it comes out sort of bitter, but I hope the resolve towards the end shows a turn away from that darkness and into a more self-confident future.”

ELIAS RØNNENFELT – “THE ORCHIDS” (PSYCHIC TV COVER)

Iceage’s Elias Rønnenfelt says this Psychic TV track is “one of my favorite songs,” and has covered it live many times. Here is the studio version.

PETER MATTHEW BAUER (THE WALKMEN) – “GOLD PAINT FOR BLUE SKIES”

Walkmen co-founder Peter Matthew Bauer is back with this new single that features his sometimes bandmate Matt Barrick on drums.

FLORENCE ROAD – “STORM WARNINGS”

Florence Road’s moody new single is accompanied by a video directed by Willow Kenedy. “Had whirlwind trip to dingle last month and got to shoot a very magical music video for Storm Warnings,” the band say. “We weren’t sure what weather we were going to get on the day, but true to irish form, it was perfectly horrible. Probably the first time we were glad of it.”

IMMATERIALIZE – “EVOLUTION”

Immaterialize, the Chicago duo of of Alana Schachtel (aka Lipsticism) and Erik Fure (aka DJ Immaterial), will release their debut album, Perfect on January 23 via ANgel Tapes and this is the ethereal first single. They say: “‘Evolution’ is inspired by looking at a part of yourself that’s mean (ugly), but recognizing that’s not all there is and that there are also tendencies towards altruism (but also greed). Not wanting to spend too much time in a space of wishing you were an entirely different person. Accepting the full spectrum of emotion within oneself.”
