John Candy is getting the biographical documentary treatment he always deserved.

John Candy: I Like Me, from producer Ryan Reynolds and director Colin Hanks, opens this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 4, ahead of a Prime Video release worldwide next month. As its new trailer shows, it’s a heartwarming tribute to the Canadian star, who died in 1994 at age 43.

The trailer opens with remarks from Candy’s Stripes (1981) costar Bill Murray, who says, “I could tell you what was right about John Candy, or what was wrong. But he was my friend.”

“And … I don’t wanna cry, but when you see him, when you see his face….” he trails off, tearing up.

Aside from Murray, other friends and costars who make an appearance in the emotional trailer include Steve Martin, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Aykroyd, Tom Hanks, Martin Short and Mel Brooks.

The new trailer offers glimpses of Candy’s upbringing in Toronto, as well as his earliest screen roles before breaking out in 1980s hits Stripes, National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), Spaceballs (1987) and more — including 1987’s Planes, Trains and Automobiles, which inspired the documentary’s title.

“When you hear the name John Candy, your face lights up,” said Hanks, 47, and Reynolds, 48, in a statement. “He wasn’t just a great actor; he was an even better person. People loved his everyman qualities, but they didn’t know how relatable John really was.”

They added, “He went through the same struggles we all do, except now we talk about them. We are incredibly honored to have gotten to know the man better through this process and to bring the real John Candy to audiences starting with his hometown of Toronto.”

John Candy: I Like Me features “never-before-seen home videos, intimate access to his family, and candid recollections from collaborators to paint a bigger picture of one of the brightest stars of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s,” per a synopsis.

The synopsis adds, “It’s the story of a son, husband, father, friend and professional driven to bring joy to audiences and loved ones while battling personal ghosts and Hollywood pressures.”

Among the documentary’s co-producers are the late actor’s wife Rosemary Margaret Hobor, as well as their son Christopher Candy and daughter Jennifer Candy-Sullivan.

A rep told PEOPLE at the time that the Candy family was giving Maximum Effort access to the Uncle Buck star’s archive and home video footage.

Reynolds has previously expressed his admiration for his fellow Canadian actor, sharing a tribute montage he made for Candy on the 25th anniversary of his death in 2019. Directing the doc is Hanks, whose father Tom Hanks previously worked with Candy on 1983’s Splash and 1985’s Volunteers.

John Candy: I Like Me is on Prime Video Oct. 10.
