With fans of the Black Phone movies eagerly awaiting an update on the franchise’s future, director Scott Derrickson has revealed that there is a chance that a third film will happen. In a recent interview, the Doctor Strange director opened up about the fate of his latest horror film series, stating that the Black Phone franchise could continue under one condition.

Scott Derrickson says ‘there certainly can be more’ regarding Black Phone 3

While speaking with Collider‘s Aidan Kelley, Scott Derrickson stated that although he is open to the idea of making a sequel to Black Phone 2, such a project will only materialize if he comes up with the right idea for it.

“There certainly can be more. But again, there doesn’t have to be. If there is to be more, there has to be a reason for it,” the 59-year-old director said about the prospect of Black Phone 3.

He then added, “I enjoy franchises. I think I’ve seen every Halloween movie, and that’s a lot. I saw every Elm Street movie. So, part of it is the delight of going back to characters or to iconic villains that you’re interested in seeing again. But for me, I’m interested in seeing more audaciously fresh takes that are surprising.”

Notably, in Black Phone 2, Ethan Hawke’s villainous Grabber meets his supposed end again when Gwen and Finney, played by Madeleine McGraw and Mason Thames, trap him inside a frozen lake after receiving help from the spirits of his previous victims.

Talking about the general consensus regarding the sequel, Derrickson noted, “I think that the response to this movie, the majority of the audience loved it because it was so different. Now, some people took issue with it or didn’t like it because it was so different, and that’s okay. I understand if you wanted to see something closer to the first film. That’s fine, but that doesn’t interest me.”

He also reiterated that a third film featuring the Grabber would only happen if continuing the story actually makes sense. “So, if there’s going to be a Black Phone 3, it would have to be another big pivot. Otherwise, I don’t see the point of making it,” Derrickson added.
