Last summer at Coachella, where she performed a solo set, Jennie Kim untied her bathrobe and playfully flashed a bikini top with her name on it. If the 30-year-old were anyone else, it would’ve been just another Instagram Reel—but she’s a breakout K-pop artist from Blackpink, so the move made international headlines. Fans screamed. Social media pounced. And just like that, Jennie became an instant bikini icon.
That’s great news for Francesca Aiello, the founder and creative director of Frankies Bikinis, and now for us, too. On April 2, the California beachwear brand will launch JENNIE x Frankies Bikinis, a capsule collection of “swim to street” bathing suits, boy shorts, tees, and sweats created with the megastar herself. “Frankie has always created pieces that I would actually want to wear, so I always loved the brand,” Jennie tells ELLE exclusively. “I thought it would be a really cool opportunity to show my side of swimwear and create pieces that felt very me.”
That includes vintage-inspired boy shorts and crochet knits (“It just felt very natural with the vintage inspiration and the overall mood we wanted,” Jennie says) along with a cherry-colored star tee that will likely hit her next concert’s VIP section with the force of a thousand TikTok hearts. “I’m so proud of this collaboration,” says Aiello. “Bringing Jennie into the Frankies world felt like the most natural and exciting creative partnership we’ve embarked on.” You can see the easy beach vibes running through the campaign shot by Alessio Albi, which features the superstar leaning out of a vintage Volkswagen bus, driving a black scooter down the shoreline, and posing with Aiello herself in white string bikinis.
If you prefer a more covered-up look, “Start with one of the sets or minidresses so you feel comfortable first,” Jennie advises. “And then you can always mix it with things that make you feel comfortable.”
Would she ever incorporate the new line into her upcoming tour wardrobe, or another concert in the future? “Yeah, I think I would,” Jennie answers. “I’d probably wear a bikini top with oversized pants or a jacket. In the summer, I like mixing swimwear with casual clothes to add that effortless element.”
Stay tuned for her stateside arrival in June, when Jennie headlines Governors Ball in New York City with Lorde and A$AP Rocky. “We’re still working on the looks,” she says. “But I think they’ll be fun and a little bold. Festivals are always different from regular shows, so we’re trying a few new things. I’m excited for this one.”
