Boards of Canada have dropped their first new music since 2013.
The influential Scottish duo uploaded a new, three-minute track titled ‘Tape 05’ to their YouTube channel yesterday (16th April), with a shortened version also shared on Warp Records’ Instagram page. You can listen to the new track below.
The single arrives following a cryptic campaign that began earlier this month when a number of fans were sent mysterious VHS tapes. The Scottish duo’s Hexagon Sun symbol later popped up on posters seen across multiple cities.
‘Tape 05’ marks the first new track from Boards of Canada — aka Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin — since their fourth album ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest’ in 2013, and has led many fans to speculate that a new Boards of Canada album may be on the way.
Representing Scotland’s Hexagon Sun art collective, of which Sandison and Eoin are members, The Hexagon Sun symbol has been associated with Boards of Canada since the ’90s.
The logo was also featured on the VHS tapes that were sent through distribution channels linked to their label Warp Records, as well as its retail arm, Bleep.
In 2019, Boards of Canada were among the artists featured on a ten-LP box set from their long-time label home of Warp, alongside label mates Aphex Twin and Autechre, titled ‘WXAXRXP Sessions’.
‘Tomorrow’s Harvest’ was preceded by 2005’s ‘The Campfire Headphase’.
