“Hoppers” earned $13.2 million on Friday from 4,000 North American theaters. Disney and Pixar expect $40 million by Sunday, a figure that could run much higher thanks to stellar word of mouth and a lack of family-friendly fare in cinemas.
The animated comedy follows 19-year-old environmentalist Mabel, who transfers her consciousness to a robotic beaver (ala “Avatar”) to infiltrate the complicated world of the animal kingdom. “We Bare Bears” creator Daniel Chong serves as director and co-wrote the screenplay with Jesse Andrews. Cast members include Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, Dave Franco, Eduardo Franco and Aparna Nancherla.
