Brandy is speaking out for the first time since she abruptly ended her and Monica‘s concert in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Videos posted to social media show the two singers performing a duet when Brandy suddenly walked off-stage, leaving Monica to finish the final songs by herself. To fans dismay, several songs from the setlist were not performed, including the duo’s hit duet, “The Boy Is Mine.”
In a statement posted to Instagram, Brandy apologized to the disappointed concertgoers and explained why she ended the show so suddenly. Comments on the post were turned off.
“To my dear fans in Chicago, thank you all for the overwhelming love, support, and — most importantly — your prayers,” Brandy said. “I sincerely apologize for the abrupt end to last night’s performance in Chicago. After weeks of nonstop rehearsals, last night I experienced dehydration and feelings of wanting to faint. Everyone involved agreed that prioritizing my well-being was of the utmost importance.”
“I still made the decision to try and return and give it my all despite not feeling OK with having to make some adjustments and the show being very technical,” she continued. “Unfortunately, it was impossible to fully connect sonically with the production, I really appreciate everyone’s best efforts.”
“I’m deeply grateful to my sister, Monica, for stepping up with such grace and professionalism and the entire crew for their continued care and support,” she concluded. “I went from the arena to see a doctor nearby and have taken the proper precautions to help moving forward. Your understanding, patience, and unwavering belief mean the world to me.”
Brandy also said that she looks forward to returning to the stage “stronger” and “more grateful than ever” for her and Monica’s concert in Indianapolis, Indiana on Sunday, October 19.
The ’90s hitmakers announced their joint tour in June, revealing on social media that they would be performing in 27 cities across the United States from October to December. The tour marks 27 years since “The Boy Is Mine” spent 13 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.
“Monica and I coming together again isn’t just about the music — it’s about honoring where we came from and how far we’ve both come,” Brandy said in a statement to the press when the tour was announced. “‘The Boy Is Mine’ was a defining chapter in R&B, and to share the stage all these years later is bigger than a reunion — it’s a celebration of growth, sisterhood and the love our fans have given us from day one.”
“The love that ‘The Boy Is Mine’ continues to receive means everything to me,” Monica added at the time. “This tour is a celebration of our history, our impact, and the fans who have grown with us.”
The tour kicked off on Thursday, Oct. 16 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
