Brantley Gilbert Says ‘Good Damn’ Is Meant to Give Fans the Courage to ‘Shoot Your Shot’

Brantley Gilbert is giving fans a closer look at the inspiration behind his latest single, “Good Damn,” and it turns out the song is rooted in both personal experience and a message of taking chances.  

While co-hosting Backstage Country with Elaina Smith, Gilbert opened up about the track from his new album, Sins of the Father, explaining how it reflects pieces of his own love story while remaining relatable for listeners at every stage of life.  

When Smith noted that much of Gilbert’s new album draws on his real-life romance, the country star confirmed that “Good Damn” was influenced by his reconnection with the woman who would later become his wife.  

“You know, we spent some years apart and kinda got back together, and the rest is history,” Gilbert shared.  

While that personal journey helped shape the song, he said the goal wasn’t to make every track from his latest album exclusively about married life. “We wanted to have a few that were reminiscent and also songs that folks that aren’t married with three kids can relate to,” he explained.  

Gilbert said the track is also about encouraging people to take a chance when love presents itself.  

“This was just about shooting your shot, man,” he said.  

Whether it’s reconnecting with an old flame or striking up a conversation with someone new, Gilbert hopes the song inspires listeners to be bold. “Whether it’s an old flame or somebody that catches your eye in a bar, it’s supposed to motivate you a little bit, give you a little incentive to go up and shoot your shot and see what happens.”  

Given Gilbert’s own story, Smith pointed out that his gamble ultimately paid off.  

“You had a very good outcome with that,” she joked.  

The conversation also turned to the music video for “Good Damn,” which marked Gilbert’s first use of CGI. The fiery visuals impressed fans, but they also briefly fooled one very important viewer—his son, Barrett.  

Gilbert laughed as he recalled Barrett becoming genuinely concerned after seeing flames engulf one of his favorite trucks in the video.  

“My son Barrett loves that truck,” Gilbert said. “So he was super worried when he saw the video that the truck was on fire and gone.”  

The “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” singer also revealed that working with director Kyle Kogan made the filming process surprisingly simple. “I’d never done CGI before. It was an interesting process,” he said.  

Instead of spending long hours on set, Gilbert described the shoot as one of the easiest of his career. “One of the easiest video shoots of my career. Super short. There was a lot of downtime. And then making sure he had every shot right where I’d walk in, knock it out, go back to the bus, and it was an easy day.”
