Brett Goldstein says Jennifer Lopez shoot ‘a dream’ with a caveat

NEW YORK − Brett Goldstein is no stranger to fame as a part of the beloved TV shows “Ted Lasso” and “Shrinking,” working alongside the likes of Jason Sudeikis and Harrison Ford respectively.

But filming with Jennifer Lopez? In Hoboken, New Jersey, close to JLo’s native Bronx, New York?

“A nightmare,” Goldstein, 45, deadpans as he recalls working on “Office Romance,” a Netflix romcom with a yet-to-be-announced release date.

“The shoot was a dream,” he clarifies. “The two days we filmed outside were, forget it, just because of paparazzi everywhere. It was a nightmare.

“I thought, ‘If (Lopez and I) make another film together, I’m going to keep all the scenes indoors,” he continues, laughing at the notion. “There will be no exterior shots.”

Before fans get to see his Lopez collaboration, they’ll get to see the actor take his turn as a leading man in the Apple TV+ sci-fi romantic drama “All of You” (streaming now).

For “All of You,” Goldstein filmed in the U.K. with fellow London native and costar, Imogen Poots. The two first met during the casting process for the film over Zoom, but Goldstein recalls that five minutes into the call, he knew Poots would be perfect for the film.

“I was like, ‘I feel like I’ve known you forever,'” the actor says. “We were laughing so much and I was like, ‘I feel like you are an old friend,’ which is what these characters are.”

In “All of You,” Goldstein and Poots play college friends Simon and Laura, who secretly have feelings for each other. When Laura takes a special test to match her with her soulmate, it leads her to Lukas (Steven Cree, “Outlander”).

Laura and Lukas marry and welcome a child, though it doesn’t stop her and Simon from carrying on an affair.

The audience may root for Simon and Laura to find their “happily ever after,” but Goldstein, who co-wrote the film with director William Bridges, still wanted to portray Lukas as a likable husband who you can’t help but feel for as this unfolds.

“I like films and stories where you have empathy for all the characters and you make it complicated,” Goldstein explains. “They do it a lot in romcoms and it’s a cheat, is you make the other guy boring and you go, ‘Obviously she’s going to leave him for the main guy.’ But in this case we were like, ‘We have to stack it against everyone. So I feel sorry for him. He’s a good guy.'”

Goldstein and Bridges have toyed around with this idea for about 10 years. The movie was filmed in 2023 and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival the following year.

“Listen, we were busy with other things,” Goldstein jokes about why it took so long to finally get the film made. “We’d be talking about other things we were working on and then we’d be like, ‘Had another thought about “All of You.”‘ We just eventually were like, ‘We need to (expletive) write this.”

It’s a busy time for Goldstein, who promotes “All of You” in between a trip to Los Angeles for the 77th Primetime Emmys and production of “Ted Lasso,” which is filming Season 4.

“I can’t tell you anything other than I think it’s gonna be really good,” says Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent on the show.

Goldstein offers a few more words when asked about Harrison Ford, who received his first ever Emmy nomination thanks to “Shrinking.” Goldstein co-created the dramedy and appeared in Season 2.

“Of all the people I’ve worked with, and I’ve worked with amazing people and I’ve been very lucky, Harrison Ford is the person who I am still completely in awe of,” Goldstein admits. “I’ve worked with him now three years and I am no cooler around him. He’s very lovely and he’s always been very disarming and charming. But the whole time I’m still like, ‘It’s Harrison Ford!'”
