Shonda Rhimes, the creative genius behind Netflix’s smash hit period drama Bridgerton, has shared exciting news about the fourth season with fans.
During her appearance at the Edinburgh Film Festival today (August 20), covered by Reach Screen Time, she unveiled key details about her much-loved Regency-era show, reports Manchester Evening News.
The Netflix series, which attracted over 100 million viewers in its first season alone, chronicles the romantic adventures of the Bridgerton family. In an on-stage conversation with British journalist Mishal Husain, Rhimes discussed what’s next for Bridgerton.
Husain asked, “How many seasons do you think it will run for?” to which Rhimes responded, “Exactly eight.”
When Husain probed the renowned Shondaland creator about whether she would “would let her imagination run wild beyond that”, Rhimes revealed, “The Bridgerton series is eight children. Violet Bridgerton and all eight of her children married. So every season is a child.”
But the excitement didn’t stop there, as Rhimes also hinted at “a possibility for spin-offs,” given that Bridgerton author Julia Quinn has written additional books that diverge from the main plot.
This comes after Netflix’s successful prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which delves into the early lives of Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury, according to the Express.
Meanwhile, fans are eagerly anticipating Bridgerton’s return for season four, which will focus on Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton, who is finally ready to find true love.
Sophie Baek has been cast as his romantic interest, Yerin Ha, the mysterious Lady in Silver, at a masquerade ball.
Netflix has already released a teaser showing various shots of Ton society members reading the latest Lady Whistledown scandal sheet, with the tagline, “Next season’s most captivating match will be revealed. Welcome to the marriage mart, Benedict.”
Audiences will be thrilled to see best friends Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Eloise (Claudia Jessie) make up and become “more bonded than ever.”

Speaking about his bigger role in season 4 with Netflix’s Tudum, Thompson revealed his excitement for the star-crossed romance to play out on screen.
“The scripts that Jess [Brownell] and her team have come up with are dynamite. They’re really, really, really exciting,” he said.
“The storyline is a bit of a twist on ‘Cinderella.’ You remember being told those stories as a child – the magic and the romance of them. It’s really exciting to have that weaved into the world that we know of Bridgerton… It’s such a great story, but it’s also, I hope, really relatable.”
The initial three seasons of Bridgerton focused on the lives of siblings Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), and Colin (Luke Newton) respectively, with Francesca’s (Hannah Dodd) emerging love story also highlighted in the third season.
While Benedict’s story is slated to be next and Francesca’s tale is still unfolding, fans are eagerly awaiting future series that spotlight Eloise (Claudia Jessie) and the younger siblings Hyacinth (Florence Hunt) and Gregory (Will Tilston).
